Year 4 brings exciting new partnership with the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region!

Join us for our 4th Annual CRSS Race for Hope 2012 on Saturday, September 15th at 10am.  Details COMING SOON to register to RUN, WALK or DONATE.

The mission of the Race for Hope is to hold a 5k community walk/run to raise funds to provide financial assistance to patients affected by brain, head and neck cancer in the Capital Region.

This year we have embarked on an exciting new partnership with The Community Foundation for the Greater Foundation (CFGCR)!  This partnership will enable us to expand fund distribution to eligible recipients to include all Capital Region and Greater Capital Region hospitals, cancer care facilities, and community cancer care support programs.

Since 2009, the CRSS Race for Hope events have raised a total of $142,000, of which all monies have been dedicated to fundraising, since overhead costs are underwritten by Capital Region Special Surgery.  Thus far, these proceeds have been allocated to two local 501c3 organizations: Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, Inc. and patient services at St. Peter’s Cancer Care Center.

CRSS Race for Hope3
(originally posted here on July 11, 2011 at 10:26 am by Mary Kenney)

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, Capital Region Special Surgery (CRSS) will host the 3rd annual Race for Hope. The Race for Hope is dedicated to supporting persons in our community with brain, head, and neck cancer. I love this race for a few reasons.

On February 21, 2006, I woke up one morning and couldn’t walk. Literally. I stepped out of bed and fell to the floor, unable to support myself. A piece of a ruptured disc had broken off and was lodged against my sciatic nerve. After my surgery, Dr. Edward Scheid told me my sciatic nerve was so damaged, it was actually ”shredded”. But thanks to his mad skills, I was on the mend. Last year I saw Dr. Scheid at the 2nd annual Race for Hope. I went to say hello and I was surprised when he remembered me. He asked how I was doing, but then stopped when he saw I was registered to run. He said, ”You must be doing well if you’re running today!” Yes indeed, and I thank Dr. Scheid and his team for that. So, I am happy to support CRSS as they support Ronald McDonald House of the Capital Region and St. Peter’s Patient Care Services (uninsured and under-insured patient fund) this year through the Race for Hope.

Another reason the Race for Hope has my support is because of their support for the Ronald McDonald House of the Capital District. I can’t say enough about this organization and all that they do. A few months ago Grace & Cocktails spent a Saturday afternoon at the House. We had a tour and then took over their spacious kitchen to prepare dinner for the families that were staying at the House. It truly is a home away from home for these families, a much needed comfort and respite as they cope with the stress of having a seriously ill child hospitalized in one of our local hospitals.

Lastly, the Race for Hope course through Slingerlands is a really beautiful course. Last year the day couldn’t be more perfect. Crystal blue September skies were without a cloud. But if you’re not into running, you can also walk along, and there is also a Family Walk with Ronald McDonald himself! (I met Ronald last year along with Jeff Yule, it was pretty awesome.) Click here to check out all the details, and to register.

Jerry Abdelnour, Beginner 5K Coach

Hello everyone!  My name is Jerry and I am excited to be a beginner 5k coach for this year’s CRSS Race for Hope. My CRSS Race for Hope team page can be found by clicking here.

I am one dedicated runner!  I ran cross country for Cohoes High School ’70 – ’74 and helped coach Shaker High School girls cross country team for two years before getting hooked on marathon running.  I have helped coach people run multiple marathons and half marathons over the last 25 years.  In 2011 I finished my twelfth Boston Marathon in a row while helping Patrick House the winner of “The Biggest Loser” achieve a personal best time. When not running, you can find me at J & J Service, Inc and Building on Love.

Jerry will be holding his training runs on Saturday mornings in Cohoes beginning July 23rd.  If you wish to join Jerry (and he’d love to have you along!) please email him at dreamabs@aol.com
